HRD-KORE Fin Range

Our HRD-KORE range of fins is broken up into a number of different distinct design series.

Each of these series will be detailed separately with information presented on the available templates, dimensional information, and combinations.

Some of our older series are not displayed here, so if you are looking for an older design, feel free to contact us for availablity.

The A4C is the latest series to be added to the range and is also the most extensive with the largest number of designs, but these are only available now as CNC machined fins, so look at that page for details.

Clicking on one of the cards below will take you to the section of the page for those fins. All fins for sale can now be bought directly from this page. It is no longer necessary to navigate to the store in order to purchase fins!

The primary driving force behind the design of these fins is to deliver a template that behaves more like a wing than your typical "dolphin fin" style surfboard fin. The motivation for this design all started from the design of a tail wing for a foil board.

Like many modern wings this design features a tip extension to enhance the performance of the fin. This extension is flipped 16º to the outside and has a slight hollow foil on the inside face. The body of the fin also features a strong hollow foil. These fins are very efficient, fast, with a ton of drive. They also have the uncanny ability to help the board move through dead spots on the wave.

There are actually three separate designs lumped into this category as they are commonly used together.

The WTF range currently consists of just this single template, but it is something else. It is very hard to classify this fin as it is so unusual and yet is an unbelievable performer.

Don't let the look of the fin throw you off. There is a lot going on with this fin and it delivers, big time. The simplest description for this fin is that it represents a super canard-style fin. The fin is not just a simple vertical fin it has two distinct breaks in its profile with the central blade area flipped out by 7º and the trailing tip extension at 25º. This fin has to been seen to believe what is going on with the shape.

It is most commonly used with a more upright back fin, that in most cases is larger than this fin. The WTF serves as the transitional fin in a reverse quad setup where it initiates turns and then transitions the turn onto the back fin. Amazingly, this fin works in an incredibly wide range of conditions and wave heights. It has been tested in everything from 3' faces to 25' faces, and it works through the whole range.

The XTC range currently consists of wide range of template sizes, but the two side fins shown here, along with the center fin, have been the most heavily used and tested this Hawaiian winter.

The primary driving force behind the design of these fins is to deliver a template design that behaves more like a wing than your typical "dolphin fin" style surfboard fin.

Due to their very upright nature they turn extremely well with out loss of speed through the turns. The tips play a crucial role in the turning process as they allow for transitioning of the fin during a turn. This means as the board is placed further on it's rail the tip of the fin becomes more vertical in the water allow it to create a pivot point. Hard to describe but something that can be easily felt when using the fins.

This pair of side being unmatched means they can be ridden either way in a quad setup, but in most of our testing they were ridden with the larger fin in the back. So they worked very well as a Twinzer setup. When coupled with a center fin either of these templates work really well, the smaller one for a very loose feel, or the larger for a positive feel in a wide range of conditions.

For thrusters two combinations can be created with the XTC-413 / XTC450C for a smaller looser setup and the XTC-500 / XTC-450C combo for a lot more drive and hold. Due to the shape of the center fin it has a lot of hold when positioned further forward while still providing great turning ability due to the more upright nature of the body of the fin.

These fins have been ridden in boards ranging from small fishes and kneeboards, through guns to tow boards. They have been successfully surfed in everything from 3' slop to 40' faces. They work!

The DS series currently consists of just this single template, it looks like a variant on a hatchet fin but there is a lot going on with this fin that is not apparent when viewing It from the side.

This design delivers a lot of drive and speed from a very small package. It is only 4" tall but due to the raked back shape it has a lot of pop out of turns and amazing holding power.

The unique thing about this design is the fact that the entire upper blade is flipped outboard by 6º and both the bottom portion of the fin and the upper blade have very strong hollow foils. The combination of these features make this fin incredibly fast and effortless through turns.

By flipping the upper portion of the blade will gain a couple of critical performance enhancements. Firstly, it really helps the fin transition through a turn making the turns feel more fluid. Secondly, as the board transitions more onto the rail the upper blade becomes more vertical in the water, dramatically enhancing the feel in the turn. Essentially it makes it a lot easier to push off the fin in a turn. When coupled with the flex in the fin there is a lot of pop out of the turn for such as small fin.

The speed of this fin comes from the fact that it has a very low wetted surface, so this reduction in drag helps it go through the water a lot faster. Plus the hollow inside foils also greatly enhances the water flow over the fin, which really helps the speed.

Surprisingly, for as small as this fin is it works incredibly well as the side fin in a thruster setup, primarily due to the shape. On shortboards this fin rocks in a thruster setup when coupled with the XTC-450C center fin. It is also good as a side bit in a 2PLUS1 setup.

WTF / XTC / DS Fin Combinations

Given the limited sizes for the fins in this series the following combinations are possible.

Additional combinations can also be created by mixing them with other fins, some of which are also shown here.

A4C Quad
WTF/XTC QUAD

In some ways this is more like a reverse quad or a twinzer in that the forn fin in smaller than the back fin. Bottom line, this is one amazing fin combo as the WTF serves as the ideal transition fin driving the board through turns and onto the XTC-500, which will then power through the rest of a turn.

USES:

Common QUAD set that is matched and therefore best ridden with the WTF in the front. Small to large size waves.

XTC STD Quad
XTC Standard QUAD

Combination of the XTC-500 in the front and the XTC-413 in the back.

USES:

Standard QUAD set for this series. Small to large waves.

XTC Reverse Quad
XTC Reverse QUAD

Combination of the XTC-413 in the front and the XTC-500 in the back.

USES:

Reverse QUAD set for this series. Small to large waves, but better for larger waves where more projection is needed.

A4C Twinzer
XTC Thruster

Standard thruster combo with the XTC-500 in the front and the XTC-450C as the center fin.

USES:

Standard XTC thruster setup. Small to head high waves.

USES:

An alternative QUAD setup with the DS fin in the back adding more drive, and holding power. Small to large size waves.

Split Keels

The WS2 series are a second generation version of our split keel design. These are also the first versions to be produced in our HRD-KORE RTM molding technique.

This series is made up of only two designs - a front fin WS2-400F and a back fin WS2-475. The front fin features a flipped tip for better performance and transition speed. Both fins feature extensive hollow foils on the inside faces, again geared towards improved performance.

These fins can be used in a wide range of boards but are especially well suited to fish-style boards. When placed correctly these fins can provide an enhanced twin fin feel but without the twitchiness of the typical twin fin.

The design of these split keels depends for the best performance on the fins being placed as close together as possible. By this we mean the fore-n-aft placement. Because the fins are essentially a keel fin that has been split into two separate fins their functionality depends on a tight cluster.

However, this setup can still work really well in fin setups that are more spread out, they are just not as optimal as a tight cluster. These two different templates can also be used separately, although the design was intended to be used as a quad setup.

We do not currently sell them separately they are always sold as a quad set.

WS2 QUAD
WS2-400F TWIN

The front fin in this series features our FLIP TIPS and HOLOFOILS.

The shape of the fin has a lot of rake that serves to both give the setup a lot of speed but also to improve the projection. This increased rake also helps the fins role as a transition fin where it is designed to initiate turns and then once into the turn transfer the drive onto the back fin.

The matching back fin for this set is the WS2-475, this is the main driving force of the setup. Features a shape that distributes the area fairly evenly throughout the fin, but with more area in the tip than normal fins.

This shape gives the fin a lot of power and when coupled with our HOLOFOILS plenty of speed. Projection from this fin setup is amazing making it good in a wide range of wave heights.

Works exceptionally well on fish-style boards. But it works best if the fin boxes are arranged in a tight cluster.

WS2 Fin Combinations

Because this is a matched set (SPLIT KEELS) there is only the one quad combo.

The XPD2 series is an extremely functional family with different size combinations depending on the conditions and needs.

These fins are ideal for quad setups as they feature good turning ability, plenty of drive, and lots of speed. Being an unmatched set the fins can easily be switched around as conditions warrant. They work equally well as thrusters with the dedicated center fin.

All of these fins feature our custom hollow foil technology on the inner face, which makes for a faster and more responsive fin! The unique outline keeps the base narrow for good turning, while the increased tip area provides lots of drive. The tips of the fins also feature increased toe-in to help with turning.

These are our goto fins for a wide range of boards and conditions. They have been successfully deployed on everything from 6-0 shortboards to 10-5 guns!

There is only a single template in this series the H5-400. It is commonly combined with other templates to create quad setups. But this template can be used by itself, as needed.

The H5-400 is the latest generation of this Hammer design. It is used in combo with the A4C-500, XPD2-500, and Q2-500 to create even more powerful quad sets. Can also be used as a side bite in a 2PLUS1 setup.

The H5-400 template is one of our more unusual shapes, but really is an amazing fin. Combines a very narrow base with a very large tip to generate flex that really pops out of the turns. Strictly designed to be used as a back fin in quad combos, they also makes excellent side bites in 2+1 setups, as long as there is no kelp in the area where it is being surfed!

WARNING - DUAL TAB Fin Bases

HANALEI FINS cannot guarantee against the breakage of dual tab bases. The DUAL TAB system is designed to break under a certain load or hard impact. We try to make the tabs as strong as possible but there is only so much we can do before we run into the limitations of the base design.

If a DUAL TAB base does break we will work with the customer to replace the fins at a reduced price, but we cannot outright replace the fins with no charge!

NOTE - REPLACEMENT Fins

HANALEI FINS cannot sell individual side fins, should you lose a side fin, as it means we have to break up a set of fins and then we are left with a fin that we have little chance of selling by itself.

If a fin is lost we will work with the customer by selling a set of replacement fins at a reduced price, these replacement fins would not be in a bag in order to keep the cost down!
