INTRODUCING - The JIB Series
Just when we thought we were done with new designs, another one has popped up!
INTRODUCING - The JIB Series
The design of the DV9 series was loosely based on the shape of the jib of a sailboat. After looking at the design for a long time we realized that there was a way to take it even further and closer to that inspiration.
This is something completely different and very different from our recent design focus, although not that far adrift to be unrecognizable! So just what is this new design all about, besides its radical appearance.
The main motive behind this design is to drastically reduce the area at the base of the fin to minimize the drag caused by the laminar flow along the bottom of the board. Additionally, by utilizing the severe cutaway it allows the fin to be that much looser. The blade of the fin is also ideally positioned in cleaner water above the laminar flow allowing it to be more effective at both lift generation and drive. Finally, due to the cutaway, it will allow the fin to flex a little more than something like the DV9 would typically when made with a PHAT FOIL. This designs also still preserves many of the design features of the DV9 series.
The fin still features a nice full foil with a radical HOLOFOIL on the inside face that flows all the way top the tip of the fin.
The design shown in these photos is already a little behind in the design process as we are now starting to work on the v8 version of the template, these are the v5 versions. The changes are primarily to the cutaway and are based on data gathered in the process of making the prototype sets of fins and are primarily geared towards enhancing some of the desired functions, as well as improving the construction process.
Currently, there are a large number of templates already designed in this series. Generally, the fin sizes are all slightly larger than our normal standard sizes to compensate for some of the area lost by the introduction of the radical cutaway. The current templates are - JIB-350CN, JIB-413, JIB-438, JIB-463, JIB-488, JIB-513, JIB-538, JIB-563, JIB-588, and JIB-413B. The JIB-413B is a dedicated back fin for a quad setup that is a little more vertical and with a little more blade area. The DV9-400PWR fin design is also compatible with this new design.
It is still very early days with this design so we will have a lot more to share as the process progresses. We are also just about to start the testing process so we will see if that informs our design choices. We thought we would share this right away simply because we are so excited about it and are curious to hear what people think of the concept!
While this design has a lot of similarities to the DV9 design in the form of the blade, it is a different concept. We are still very excited about the DV9 and will continue to drive that design forward in parallel with this new design.
This is what happens during a lockdown, to much time to think and experiment, creates new ideas!
We will be adding new photos to this BLOG post as we make more of the different sizes.
