HANALEI FINS BLOG

Where all the latest news about HANALEI FINS can be found, we tend to put all of our announcements here, as well as information about new designs and the testing process.

Some of the historical blog posts from previous years are slowly being moved into the new blog. Initially, all of the most interesting ones will be moved over. Eventually we hope to get all of the old posts up here so they are accessible.

Most of the new posts also get placed on our Facebook page, so they can be read there as well.

NEW DESIGN - (SPINE) SP9-750 SINGLE

Things have been a little quiet on the fin front for the last few months as we have been very busy working on the new fin system. But we finally managed to squeeze out a new design that has been around for some time but not as a single fin.

Say aloha to the SP9-750 SINGLE!

This fin takes inspiration from the SP9 side fins we worked on almost a year ago. We had always planned to make a single fin version and that has finally happened.

The ideas behind this fin are to have a very narrow spine (SP9) with a large effective blade. The design has a decent amount of rake to allow the base to be further forward for more pivot, while still providing good projection. This is not necessarily a flex fin as the spine is not heavily foiled. The intent was for it to have a slight torsional flex, although with solid fiberglass there is not a lot. The goal is to eventually make this fin using a hybrid construction technique with G10 and plywood. The G10 would be solid in the base and have plywood sandwiched on each side in the blade. The G10 would only be 1/8" thick in the blade, which would allow the bladed to twist or flex torsionally. We are waiting for some plywood to arrive so that we can make a fin using this construction method. We have done this in the past with bamboo instead of plywood.

The first versions of this fin are going to guys that ride short Edge-style single fin boards. But they would work well in any single fin or 2PLUS1 board. The fin is very deceptive in appearance as there is a lot more area in the blade than it appears in the photo. For a 7.50" fin it is going to have a lot of drive with the blade shape, but it will turn on a dime.

Stay tuned for more details on this new design over the coming months.
